How do you feel about lighting of the [Olympic] flame? If one torch went out, there will be hundreds of them behind it. With more than 200 backups, they can’t all be blown out. In addition, I like the calm process of lighting the flame.
[07:50:00] Bill Plaschke (Los Angeles Times):
Very symbolic ending, but sort of anticlimatic..I like my cauldron lit by one person…and a person people have heard of..
[07:44:00] Na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na-na hey Jude… everyone sings along!
[07:40:00] Paul McCartney is singing “Hey Jude”.
[07:38:00] Fireworks shot up into the night sky from around the Olympic Park.
[07:37:00] Seven young athletes light the Olympic Cauldron which is formed from 204 copper petals carried in by teams from across the world.
[07:30:00] Steve Redgrave takes Olympic flame into the Olympic Stadium.
[07:27:00] Sarah Stevenson, British Taekwondo athlete, takes Olympic oath on behalf of all athletes.
[07:26:00] Jade Bailey, with David Beckham, pass the Flame to Steve Redgrave to take into the Olympic Stadium.
[07:24:00] Olympic flag is hoisted.
[07:19:00] Olympic flag is being escorted into the Stadium.

[06:56:00] A helicopter drops 7 billion tiny pieces of paper on the stadium — one for each person on the planet.
[06:55:00] British delegation parade into the Stadium.
[The London Olympics Opening Ceremony] was worth watching overnight. It seemed more like a British film rather than an opening ceremony. Danny Boyle indeed gets the Oscar for Best Director. I felt so surprised when the Queen appeared with 007! I also felt so excited when Voldemort appeared! I laughed when Mr. Bean turned up! I was intoxicated when David Beckham appeared! I felt so excited when Chinese delegation was parading! Now, I am waiting for the lighting of the flame!
[06:30:00] 40 sheep, 12 horses, 3 cows, 2 goats, 10 chickens, 10 ducks, 9 geese and 3 sheep dogs are involved in the scene — looked after by 34 animal handlers.
[06:25:00] A total of 7,500 volunteers took part in a total of 284 rehearsals at two east London rehearsal sites and at the Stadium. The child volunteers were drawn from 25 schools.
The live British music mix has made [the opening ceremony] a giant music spree! Social networks were also blended into the performances. The Sections were connected tightly!
[06:17:00] Usain Bolt is carrying the Flag for Jamaica.
[06:15:00] @mfletchertimes (The Times UK):
This is a low-budget ceremony? Boyle could have spent double and not bettered it.
[06:11:00] Paul Kelso (Telegraph UK) said:
Big cheer for China. All one big Olympic family in here tonight
The Chinese delegation is parading. How dazzling is the Chinese red! Besides, the Chinese athletes are full of momentum and the flag-bearer Yi Jianlian is so handsome! Cheers for the Chinese Olympic delegation!
In the era of female flag-bearers , I strongly suggest that China use female flag-bearer in the next Olympic Games to follow the trend!
[05:50:00] An estimated number of 4 billion global audience will watch the ceremonies (Olympic opening and closing, and Paralympic opening and closing).
[05:45:00] Yi Jianlian, Chinese basketball player, leads Team China into opening ceremony.
Our opening ceremony [Beijing Olympic Games opening ceremony] was a grand show while the opening ceremony of London Olympics gives us a relaxing feeling. It looks like a big party! Love it! Love it!! Love it!!!

This Peter Pan and JK Rowling mash-up plus writhing nurses and Mike Oldfield is crazy but brilliant.
[05:18:00] Emeli Sandé sings ‘Abide with Me’.
[05:16:00] Claire Heald (BBC) said:
It was quite quiet among the crowd, after the excitement of a sky-diving Queen. But Bowie, Queen (as in the band!) and New Order fit the sparkle of the stadium and lift the mood.
Starting with the poetry of Shakespeare, Queen Elizabeth II then entered the center under the protection of 007, showing us the essence of British culture. However, why am I thinking the “drum” performance in the Industrial Revolution looks like the performance in the opening ceremony of Beijing Olympic Games?
[05:13:00] A short film records the 70-day Olympic torch relay.
[05:10:00] Jonathan Stevenson (via CNN) said:
2202: I don’t know about you, but I’m partying like it’s 1999… A sequence of brilliant British pop songs – from the Beatles, to the Rolling Stones, Queen, the Sex Pistols, David Bowie, New Order – blast out at the Olympic Park, and if you’re not up off your seat dancing the night away when this bit is on then, quite frankly, I’m not sure I want us to be friends after all.
[05:06:00] Cambell Robertson (via NYtimes) said:
[05:05:00] ‘Isles of Wonder’ cost 27 million pounds, probably more than any of Danny Boyle’s films. It included 15,000 performers, among whom were 600 dancers who work for the National Health Service, who performed a routine involving 320 beds.
Mr. Bean just ended his segment by making a flatulent sound effect on the synthesizer. The British are taking this in a somewhat different direction than Beijing, and I have to say, I heartily approve.
[05:02:00] Naomi Kyle @NaomiKyle (via twitter) said:
Ah, Mr. Bean. He could just sit there doing nothing and still make me laugh.
[05:00:00] Brian Limond @DaftLimmy (via Twitter):
The Queen’s smile is so infectious. Uplifting. Warm. Radiant.
[04:53:00] … Rowan Atkinson!
[04:53:00] The London Symphony Orchestra are performing the theme from the film ‘Chariots of Fire’… with a very familiar face joining them on keyboard…

[04:30:00] Stuntman dressed as Queen Elizabeth II parachutes into the stadium.
[04:20:00] Photo gallery
[04:18:00] The drumming is led by Dame Evelyn Glennie. Profoundly deaf since childhood, she often plays barefoot in order to feel the music more accurately.
[04:10:00] Kenneth Branagh recites Caliban’s speech, the one that runs “Be not afeard; the isle is full of noises.”
[04:05:00] Bradley Wiggins, winner of the 2012 Tour de France rang the bell to kick off the journey to the wonder isles!
The performance I will participate in has 1,400 dancers, which is the largest-ever dance performance by number of participants. For each of the five sub-groups, there are 10 “lead” performers, who will perform music from the 1970s through the present. I am a lead performer in the ”Present” group.
[04:01:00] The theme of the ceremony is “Isles of Wonder”.
[04:00:00] The London 2012 Olympic Games commence with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Olympic Stadium.
[03:45:00] The Opening Ceremony prologue has begun!
The opening ceremony of London Olympic Games is about to begin. I’m siting in the room watching Euro Sport replays of the opening ceremony of the Beijing Games. I still felt so excited! It is a very beautiful memory though I feel that the four years have flown by. [The Chinese Olympic team] has become more mature and stronger. I believe that we will become better and better. Let’s go China!
[03:35:00] Good news! The rain seems to stop soon…
[03:33:00] It’s raining in London…

I thought I could make it onto the national team and take part in the Olympic Games; however, I never imagined the day when I would serve as the Olympic flag-bearer for China. [01:50:00] Jim Roberts, Assistant Managing Editor, The New York Times (Via Twitter):

[01:45:00] It's rumored tennis players Roger Federer and Andy Murray will skip the opening ceremony due to competition schedule. Who do you expect to see at the ceremony?

[01:28:00] Zhang Yimou, director of Beijing Olympic opening ceremony, said:
I think the most important part [of the Opening Ceremony] is lighting the Olympic flame rather than the art performances. How to use a unique method to light the flame? How to use the flame lighting to demonstrate Olympic spirit of 'Swifter, Higher and Stronger'? For a director, flame lighting is the most challenging and the most difficult part. We did a lot of work on it in the Beijing Olympic opening ceremony.
[01:20:00] (via Daily Mail) London mayor Boris Johnson, spoke to a crowd of 60,000 in Hyde Park Friday, in earlier reference to comments made by US Republican candidate Mitt Romney:
There's guy called Mitt Romney who wants to know if we are ready. Are we ready? Yes we are!

His ability as a storyteller, as a creator of spectacle, his background in both theater and film and the passion he has for this city and this project -- they all just screamed at us. It wasn't a difficult choice.
[01:10:00] Media revealed the ceremony's theme is "Isles of Wonder," inspired by William Shakespeare's play about shipwrecked castaways, "The Tempest."
[01:05:00] Danny Boyle, director of the opening ceremony, said:
The Ceremony is an attempt to capture a picture of ourselves as a nation, where we have come from and where we want to be," Boyle explained in a statement in the run-up to the Games, saying he hoped to be able to tell the country's story, with the help of a vast army of volunteers who, he said "are the purest embodiment of the Olympic spirit and represent the best of who we are as a nation.
[00:51:00] Chinese government representative, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, will attend the opening ceremony.

I'm British therefore I'm a little biased but... although the Beijing opening ceremony was a shock and awe event; I think London's ceremony will be completely different. In my chauvinistic biased-ness, Britain, despite its rather small population, has been home to some of the greatest Artists, designers, Architects, novelists, actors/Directors and musicians the world has ever seen and the opening ceremony promises to utilise that. Whereas many British people are still cynical over the outcome of the games; I, as a proud Brit am very hopeful that the Olympics will advertise our creative/economic attractiveness to the world.
Only four hours left until the start of the London Olympic Games! I am reviewing the photos of Beijing Olympic opening ceremony four years ago - it was so exciting and unforgettable! Will the opening ceremony of London Olympics give me the same feeling? I am looking forward to watching it!
